Mission and Belur monastery founded by Swami Vivekananda ji, the chief disciple of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, which aims to serve the headquarters. It is situated on the western bank of the Hooghly River, one of the important institutions in Belur, West Bengal, India and Kolkata.

History of Belur Math

In January 1897, Swami Vivekananda arrived in Calcutta, Calcutta with his small group of Western disciples. Through this, two monasteries were established, one at Belur, which became the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission and the other in the Himalayas of Mayawati, Champawat district in Uttarakhand, Uttarakhand, called the Advaita Ashram. Both these monasteries were built to receive and train the young men who eventually became the saints of the Ram Krishna Mission and to train them in their work. In the same year, philanthropic activity was started and relief from famine was brought. Swami Vigyananda, brother-monk of Swami Vivekananda and one of the disciples of the monastery of Ramakrishna, who was in his pre-monastic life, a civil engineer, designed the temple according to the views of Vivekananda and Swami Sivananda, who were the then presidents. Were. The foundation stone of Belur Math was laid on 16 May 1935. The huge construction was handled by Martin Burn & Company. The mission declared Belur Math as "A Symphony in Architecture".

Campus at Belurmath

Temples dedicated to Ramakrishna, Sharda Devi, and Swami Vivekananda are included in the premises of Belur Math on the banks of Hooghly, their relics and the main monasteries of the Ramakrishna Order. There is a museum in the complex which contains articles related to the history of Ramakrishna Math and Mission. Many educational institutions associated with the Ramakrishna Mission are located in the huge campus adjacent to Belur Math. Belur Math is considered as a pilgrimage site near Kolkata by major tourist sites and devotees. Former President APJ Abdul Kalam considered Belur Math as "a place of heritage and national importance".

Belur math: Sri Ramakrishna temple

The design of the temple was designed by Swami Vivekananda and the architect was Swami Vigyanananda, a direct monastic disciple of Ramakrishna. The museum chronicles the movement and contemporary development of Bengalis. The center also celebrates the annual birthdays of Ramakrishna, Vivekananda, Sarada Devi and other monastic disciples. One of the main attractions is the annual celebration of Kumari Puja and Durga Puja. The tradition of Kumari Puja was started in 1901 by Vivekananda.
