Located on the eastern side of the Hooghly
River, Dakshineswar Kali Temple is a Hindu Navratna temple located in
Dakshineswar, close to Kolkata. The Goddess is Bhavatarini, an aspect of Kali,
the Goddess presiding over the temple, which means, 'frees the devotees from
Sahastra i.e. from the' ocean of existence '. Rani Rashmoni was a devotee of
Kali Ma, a philanthropist by whom the temple was built in 1855. The
19th-century temple of Bengal is famous for its association with a mystic
Ramakrishna.
There is a large courtyard around the
temple, which has rooms with boundary walls, in addition to the temple complex,
the nine-sponsored main temple. On the banks of the river, Radha-Krishna's
temple, the bathing ghat on the river, there are twelve temples dedicated to
Shiva - a temple dedicated to Rani Rashmoni, the companion of Kali. 'Nahabat'
is the chamber located in the north-west corner just behind the rear of the
Shiva temples, where Ramakrishna and Mother Sharda spent a considerable part of
their lives.
History of Dakshineswar Temple
Rani
Rashmoni was a Mahishi from the caste, and in the mid-19th century Rani
Rashmoni founded the Dakshineswar Kali Temple. Rani Rashmoni was known for her
philanthropic activities. Rani Rashmoni was to travel in twenty-four boats to
the Divine Mother carrying relatives, servants and supplies, so prepared to go
on a long journey to Kashi in the year 1847 to express her devotees to the holy
Hindu city of Kashi.
Rani
Rashmoni Impressed by her dream, Rani Rashmoni immediately discovered and
bought a plot of 30,000 acres in Dineswaran village. The large temple was built
between 1847 and 1855. This plot was purchased from an Englishman Jake Hasti,
and was then known as "Sahban Bagicha". According to Tantra
traditions, this place is considered suitable for the worship of Shakti, partly
because the old Muslim burial ground is considered to be the shape of a turtle.
It took nine hundred thousand rupees and eight years to complete the
construction. The idol of Goddess Kali was formally established in the temple on
the day of celebration on 31 May 1855 by the famous priest "Ramkumar Chattopadhyay"
under the name of "Sri Sri Jagadishwari Mahakali". On 31 May 1855
more than 1 lakh Brahmins from different parts of the country were invited for
the auspicious occasion, his nephew Hridaya assisted him as soon as his younger
brother moved to Gadai or Gadadhar and hence. The following year, after the
death of Ramkumar Chattopadhyay, the post was handed over to Ramakrishna and
his wife Sarada Devi, a queen on the ground floor living in a small room on the
south side of Nahabat, now a pilgrimage site dedicated to her. Ramakrishna
was responsible in the temple for bringing a lot in the way of both fame and
pilgrims.
Five
years and nine months after the inauguration of the temple, Rani Rashmoni fell
seriously ill in 1861, realizing that her death was near, she handed over the
purchased property in Dinajpur to the Trust as an inheritance for the
maintenance of the temple. decided to. After completing all her work, Rani
Rashmoni died on 19 February 1861. After his death, his son-in-law went to
their respective premises to celebrate Durga Puja.
Architecture of Dakshineswar Temple
Near
the main temple is a line of twelve identical Shiva temples, built in the
Mango-Chala Bengal architecture on the east side, built on either side of the
ghat on the Hooghly River. To the northeast of the temple complex is the Vishnu
temple or Radha thorn temple. A flight of steps leads up to the pillared verandah
and to the temple where a silver throne rests with the idol of Lord Krishna and
the idol of Radha.
The
sanctum sanctorum has an idol of Goddess Kali, known as Bhavatarini, standing
on the chest of a huge Shiva, and two idols are placed on a lotus with a
thousand petals made of silver.
Standing
